What is National Innovation Awards (NIA)?

NIA recognizes & honors Kenya’s leading innovators with remarkable achievements in their fields.

The purpose of the National Innovation Award is to stimulate and encourage innovation in national priority areas. The Award therefore plays a critical role in strengthening the national innovative capacity through motivation, recognition, and support of innovators.
The National Innovation Awards 2021 is made up of 3 major award categories;
Big4 Innovation Award, Assistive Technology Award, and Government Agency Innovation Award.

Big 4 Innovation Award

Do you know an innovation that is outstanding and innovative within the Big 4 Agenda (Affordable Healthcare, Affordable Housing, Food Security, and Manufacturing)?
You can submit the innovation to be feted and awarded at KIW2021.

Submission

The public is invited to submit innovations or nominate agencies for any of the three awards.

Shortlisting & Selection

Nominated innovations and agencies are judged and vetted leading to KIW 2021.

Pitching & Awards

The top innovations pitch and are awarded (+agencies) at the KIW Awards Gala.

How can you participate?

Eligibility Criteria

For the Big4 Innovation Award, only innovations creating solutions within Kenya's Big Four Agenda (listed below) are eligible.

Affordable Healthcare

Affordable Housing

Food Security

Manufacturing

The innovation should also meet the criteria stipulated below;

The innovator OR founder of the innovation MUST BE a Kenyan citizen

The innovation MUST BE registered in Kenya

The innovation must have been in operation for AT LEAST one year

The innovation SHOULD NOT have received an award from NIA before

The innovation SHOULD have a clearly demonstrable product or service with an existing market

The innovation SHOULD have a profile available online with appropriate information

The innovation SHOULD have an active and permanent team of two or more members

Nominate

We're looking for Government Agencies that have gone above and beyond in spurring and supporting innovation in their area of influence and the country as a whole. The agency should also meet the criteria stipulated below;

The agency MUST have impactful programs and initiatives that address existing social issues in line with the SDGs OR programs and initiatives that support innovators.

The agency SHOULD have the ability to display a collaborative framework with the public and industrial experts.

The agency SHOULD have the ability to demonstrate uptake of innovation within the organization.

The agency MUST have at least developed OR are in the process of developing an evidence-based approach to governance.

The agency MUST have established an innovative process or implemented new approaches to carry out initiatives that better serves the needs of our country.

The agency SHOULD be involved in the creation of new policy and legal frameworks that encourage and stimulate innovations and experimentations in Government.

The agency SHOULD have a profile available online with appropriate information on their various activities and initiatives

Nominate

For the Assistive Technology Award, only innovations that benefit vulnerable groups specifically the disabled, and the elderly/senior citizens are eligible. The innovation should also meet the criteria stipulated below;

The innovator OR founder of the innovation MUST BE a Kenyan citizen

The innovation MUST BE registered in Kenya

The innovation must have been in operation for AT LEAST one year

The innovation SHOULD NOT have received an award from NIA before

The innovation SHOULD have a clearly demonstrable product or service with an existing market

The innovation SHOULD have a profile available online with appropriate information

The innovation SHOULD have an active and permanent team of two or more members
